London United Women victorious over National Cup winners

London United Basketball Club

Our Womens team faced tough opposition from Essex Blades a week after the Essex team lifted the National Womens Cup.

With our United Women ending up the wrong side of a tough 89-62 loss after their last encounter, United had to come out strong.

An outstanding start from United (14-2) forced an Essex time out. However the Londoners intensity kept the pressure on the Essex team and maintained the advantage to end the first stanza (21-8).

The second quarter was much more competitive, with Essex sensing that United were out for the win they responded with increased aggression on defense and charging offensive rebounds with success. At the half time break United held a 13 point lead, holding the Cup winners to just 23 points after 20 minutes of play.

Essex stepped up the pressure after the half time break with United heading for foul trouble in an attempt to stop Essex Blades from cutting the advantage.

In the last stanza the United Ladies battled to start the last minute with the possibility of a win. Up by 3, Essex connected a triple to tie the game with United immediately responding with a three of their own. Great defense from United afforded them another possession and a free throw to close the game 60-56 and claim the win.

Womens Head Coach, Jaime Mobellán stated ‘Our last game against this opposition showed us we had lessons to learn. This victory shows the progress we have made this season. Our intensity on defense during the entire 40 minutes brought us an amazing win. We believed in our victory since the beginning and we WORKED for it. Congratulations girls!’

London United Women’s next fixture is against league leaders Southwark Pride on 20th February 6pm tip at City of London Academy.
