Senior Women end inaugural season with Cup title

London United Basketball Club

After gaining qualification against Brighton University, our Women’s team had to face tough competition from Essex University in the final of the BUCS Women’s South Eastern Cup competition.

Essex University came to the final undefeated the entire season resulting in a tense start to the competition. After 7 minutes of play the score was just 3-2 in our favor. However, after stealing a couple balls in the last minute of the quarter we improved that difference by 6 points (10-4). In the second quarter they came back and they did it pretty well. They started scoring from outside and getting offensive rebounds with our offense becoming very static and too dependent of the three point shot. They outscored us getting an easy 0-10 run gaining a ten points advantage going into the half time break (16-26).

Leaving any doubts about the first half performance in the locker room we came out attacking the third stanza with aggressive defense. With the best defensive performance of the season we only gave 2 points in 10 minutes. Our ball movement flowed much better and our inside players started to score easier and drawing more fouls putting their big players in foul trouble.

Head Coach Jaime Mobellan proudly stated ‘The game was won in the second half with our players showing an outstanding effort for controlling the game in the final quarter. Our players gave a demonstration of their experience putting a 10-point distance between us in the last minute (48-38) that gave us the game in the end. This Cup belongs to the whole team: Yamna, Belén, Oliwia, Sandra, Andrea, Paloma, Sara, Felichi, Lucía and Rubén. Well done TEAM!!!! I am very proud to be your coach’.

Our Women’s squad end their first season of competition as BUCS South Eastern Conference Cup champions, top of the BUCS South Eastern 3A league and third in NBL Womens Senior competition.
