Zastal Zielona Gora from Poland claimed the London Summer Series U18 trophy by the smallest possible margin. The tournament concluded with a three way tie between London Regional U17, Zastal Zielona Gora and Sopron from Hungary with all teams claiming one victory each. The young Polish side emerged victorious with a 1 point difference, with Sopron settling for 2nd place with a 0 point difference.
The margin of Zastal’s victory was indicative of the very competitive nature of the entire tournament, with the outcomes of games being decided very frequently in the dying seconds.
Despite of 3 defeats for London United, they enjoyed three very productive days of international competition. Our young United players stayed very competitive till very last minutes of the game and gave Coach Szatkowski an opportunity to look to the upcoming season with a great dose of optimism. Carl Campbell continued to establish himself as one of the most dominant inside young players in this country while A Khalil
and I Poorman formed an aggressive and dependable backcourt capable of handling International competition. The team has also greatly benefited from the performance of K Kanye who hurt the opposition from 3 point range.
Coach Szatkowski stated: “I am really pleased with the effort from our boys even we came short in all 3 matches. It’s very early in our preparation but we showed that we can compete with really strong teams. Playing such a high level tournament provided lots of feedback to focus our training.
Next weekend we travel to Poland to compete in a tournament which will be the last stage of preparation for the new season. I’m really excited about it as the team is showing that we are heading in the right direction.”
