Mixed results for weekend opener
Our young London United team started their campaign in Division 4 by beating local rivals Thames Valley Cavaliers 98-88. It was a worrying start with United trailing 18-1 after the first 8 minutes of play. However, the introduction of Mills and Golovcenko injected some ferocity into United’s defence creating the opportunity for Olarerin to freely attack the suddenly unsettled Cavaliers. In the second quarter the defensive wall created by Mills, Khalil and Poorman was able to almost entirely nullify the offensive threat of Cavaliers . Olarerin on the other hand set himself on a one man crusade to punish his old club helping himself to 18 points before the interval by which time United was leading by 6 points.
In the third quarter versatile 6’5’’ forward Golovcenko started finding his range, connecting 3 out 4 three point attempts to build a decisive 16 points margin. Despite of a frantic effort, Cavaliers were never able to threaten a comeback and United sailed to their first win in the senior competition.
Unfortunately the successful exploits of Saturday were not repeated a day later when Westminster Warriors ended our journey in the National Cup by beating us 112-67. Our U18 team started their campaign in the national league with defeat against Levisham Thunder 55-92.
