Poorman crowned Ealing Sports Person of the Year

Sporting heroes were crowned victorious last week at the annual Ealing Sports Awards at which London United U18 Captain took the title of ‘Adult Sports Person of the Year’.

Run in partnership between Ealing Council and Everyone Active, the ceremony was well attended, with special guests including Sky Sports presenter Marcus Buckland and 2018 British Gymnastics champion Brinn Bevan handing out awards and speaking.

The annual Ealing Sports Awards is aimed at recognising the talents and achievements of the borough’s multitude of sports clubs, inspirational volunteers and fantastic sporting individuals.
Elias claimed the Adult Sports Person of the Year award competing against 156 different nominees across the borough.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, the council’s cabinet member for finance and leisure, said: “Congratulations to all the winners and all the nominees this year. It just goes to show the array of talent that we have across our borough. With dedication, hard work and focus anything can be achieved and our sports men and women are a testament to this. The importance of these awards cannot be understated because it gives us the opportunity to recognise the talent around us and I hope that our residents are inspired by these successes that have been achieved and we have even more applicants next year.”

28947474_1329002973870286_7761136207750376235_oThis award completes a successful season for Elias who was also awarded the Defensive Player of the Year title in the Academy Basketball League (ABL) and has been selected for the league All-First Team whilst the club became ABL 2018 Champions. Internationally in the European Youth Basketball League (EYBL), the top European Junior Club competition, Elias led the division (U20 Central European) in efficiency, he was also 4th top scorer averaging an impressive 22.5 points per game and perhaps even more impressively 7th top rebounder (playing as a point guard) collecting 8.9 rebounds per game.

Elias has consistently demonstrated a mature approach and dedication towards his performance throughout the season which has reaped rewards. As captain of the U18 team, the maturity and attitude that Elias exudes, provides a galvanising inspiration for the other members of the team. Elias has a ferocious intensity on defence and impressive basketball IQ. Elias has an incredible work ethic and attitude which is also demonstrated by his ability to balance his performances both athletically and academically.
