Successful weekend for Seniors
Both London United’s senior teams have enjoyed a very successful weekend of NBL competitions. Our Division Two team successfully negotiated a tricky trip to City Birmingham Rockets in the second round of the National Cup. Our Londoners started slowly trailing by 2 at the end of the first stanza. Order was restored in the next 20 minutes with sharp shooter Modestas Krasauskas finding his range and Marius Ceponis penetrating opponents defence with rapier like moves to the basket. After 30 minutes United was leading by 20 points and the game seemed to be decided in their favour. However, a scrappy performance in the last quarter required steady leadership from Sarunas Antanavicius to secure a 100-92 win. This victory sends United on a collision course with Loughborough Riders in the next round of the National Cup to be played on 28th October.
A far more straightforward encounter took place in Division Four where United rather routinely beat Westminster Dragons 86-64. United applied their trademark full court press throughout the entire game with an obvious effect on the opposing team. United forced the Dragons into numerous turnovers which led to easy to finish fast breaks. The game was effectively finished in the third quarter when Rio Murray dominated the inside game demonstrating consummate inside moves. Afra Khalil and Guled Akobar led all scorers with 18 points apiece closely followed by Rio Murray who collected 17 points and 11 rebounds.
